About

MY STORY

Sarah Jane Cody is a literary writer and adult-diagnosed neurodivergent woman. She often uses surreal and magical elements in her fiction as a means of conveying the experience of living with a mind and body of difference.

After a long history of chronic pain, illness, psychological disorder, and mistreatment by the medical establishment, Sarah Jane was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder and autism spectrum disorder in 2022. It was the writing of her novel-in-progress, which draws partly on her experiences, in addition to a chance conversation with her hairdresser and friend that led her to investigate further and ultimately to diagnosis.

Outside of writing, she’s a singer and can be found performing occasionally on tiny stages (and frequently around campfires). She produces dark synthpop with her husband. She loves dancing, hiking, and seeking out the wonders of the natural world. She has taught creative writing classes for Pioneer Valley Writers’ Workshop and GrubStreet. She was an assistant prose editor for Pigeon Pages for three years and also a submissions reader for many more years, since near the time of the journal’s inception. Her writing has been nominated for a Pushcart prize.

After growing up largely in the woods of Greenville, South Carolina, she spent over a decade of her adult life in the uproar of NYC and at last managed to escape to the haven of Western Massachusetts where she is at home with her trees. She holds an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College and has attended Tin House Summer Writers’ Workshop.
